Why Fire Ants Love the Gulf Coast

Port Charlotte, which lies at the north end of the Charlotte Harbor Estuary along Florida’s stunning Gulf Coast, has a warm, temperate climate with significant rainfall throughout the year. In other words, it’s heaven for fire ants!

These troublemakers adore moist land. They love open areas that are exposed to direct sun, and prefer watered lawns, highway shoulders, pond shores and river banks as nesting grounds.

You May Have Fire Ants If…

  • You see dome-shaped mounds of fluffy, loose soil in lawns, playgrounds, ball fields, golf courses, around trees and stumps, under cement slabs and sidewalks, or along road shoulders.
  • You step on or disturb a mound and experience red and black worker ants aggressively rising up from below to attack whatever is standing above or near it.
  • You get a sting or bite that produces a burning sensation and, a day or so later, forms a white fluid-filled blister at the site of the sting. Red fire ant venom is the only fire ant venom that causes this symptom.

Properties with single-queen colonies may have 40 to 150 mounds and about 7 million red fire ants per acre. If infested with multi-queen colonies, there may be 200 or more mounds and up to 40 million red fire ants per acre!

Kill Fire Ants from the Inside Out

Fire Ant Control’s proven fire ant treatment focuses on sterilizing the queen. The potent granular bait is ingested by the worker ants and carried down into the colony, causing the fire ants to die naturally.

Extermination is not immediate but, once the queen has been sterilized, the entire colony will disappear within weeks, and no new ants will be born.

Because fire ants fly, however, they will eventually come back. For this reason, we recommend having your property treated three times a year to prevent further fire ant colonization.
