What is a Fire Ant?

Fire Ant Control & Treatment in Winter Park, FLWhat is a fire ant? It’s among several species of ants in the genus Solenopsis, which includes more than 200 species worldwide. It is typically reddish brown in color, lives in a colony with thousands of other ants, and has a stinger that gives it its “fiery” name.

Several species of fire ants are found in the U.S., but the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) is considered the worst of all varieties. They can be identified by their deep red thorax and black abdomen and their aggressive behavior.

Red imported fire ants are hard-working architects. They build nests outdoors in mounds of soil and live beneath them in an elaborate network of underground tunnels. Oval-shaped mounds average 10” tall, are about as wide as a dinner plate, and have no visible openings.

Thousands of fire ants live in just one fire ant colony. Properties with single queen colonies may have 40 to 150 mounds and about 7 million red fire ants per acre. If infested with multiple queen colonies, there may be 200 or more mounds and up to 40 million red fire ants per acre.

A lack of noticeable mounds may make you think you haven’t been infested with fire ants or that they’re under control, but don’t be fooled. They are most likely there… and increasing the size of their colony.

How Fire Ants Harm Your Livestock & Workers

Fire Ants have a major impact on farming activities, from workers in the fields to vulnerable livestock.

They pose a significant threat to very young animals, to caged and penned animals, to newborns if they lie down or are born on or near a mound, to weak animals that suffer from wounds or open sores, and those that are old and unable to move out of harm’s way.

The frequency of calf and cow injuries and deaths often increases during hot summer months when the fire ants are starved for moisture and food. If birthing is scheduled to occur at this time of year, placing the livestock in a designated pasture that has been treated with our effective bait will help.

Fire ants can also cause extensive damage to haying operations, cement slabs, and electrical wires and equipment. And the mounds themselves can damage pickups and ATVs and cause horses to fall and riders to take bad spills.

Fire Ant Control, LLC offers a proven fire ant treatment that works for properties ranging from a single acre to thousands of acres. Our food-like granular bait contains an insect growth regulator that sterilizes the queen and is approved for use around people, pets and livestock. With precise application, the bait falls to the ground where few living things other than ants will encounter it.

Extermination is not instantaneous but, once the worker ants have eaten the bait, carried it down into the colony and sterilized the queen, the entire colony will disappear, and no new ants will be born. With application every four months, our treatment will help prevent further fire ant colonization.
