About Red Imported Fire Ants

Red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) were accidentally introduced into Alabama aboard a cargo ship from South America in the 1930s. They are the worst of all fire ant species because they mate several times a year, reproduce rapidly, are more aggressive than other species, and have an extremely painful venomous sting that can be serious or even lethal.

Today, red fire ants infest hundreds of millions of acres, and the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) predicts they will eventually have made their homes across the south from coast to coast.

They build nests outdoors in mounds of soil and live beneath them in elaborate networks of subterranean tunnels where they reproduce very rapidly. Even when you don’t see them, they are expanding right under your feet, and thousands of them can live in a single colony.

Within each colony are workers and queens. Queens can live for two to six years and lay from 1,500 to 5,000 eggs per day. Properties infested with single-queen colonies may have up to 7 million red fire ants per acre. If multi-queen colonies have moved in, there may be as many as 40 million red fire ants per acre.

The key to controlling fire ants is to take quick action to minimize the damage they can cause, and Fire Ant Control, LLC is the best fire ant killer around.

Eliminating Fire Ants

To eliminate a fire ant colony, the queen must be killed, and all queens must be killed in multi-queen colonies. If the queens are not killed, the colony will typically move on to establish itself in a nearby area.

Fire Ant Control’s proven fire ant treatment focuses on sterilizing the queen. Our potent, food-like granular bait kills the ant colonies from the inside out. With two treatments a year, your property can be 95% free of fire ants.

The bait we use contains an insect growth regulator (to sterilize the queen) and is approved for use around humans, animals, on pastures, hay fields, farmland, and on public and private lands.
