When a fire ant mound is disturbed, even accidentally, thousands of stinging ants can be hazardous to pets that are running, playing or digging nearby. Spraying the animal with water will just aggravate the ants, causing them to hold on tight and sting more viciously. If the attack is severe, you may need to visit a veterinarian to treat the stings and pustules or blisters that develop.
