About Fire Ants

Red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) were accidentally brought into the port of Mobile, Alabama, from Brazil around 1930. Today, they infest more than 330 million acres across the southern U.S. and pose a serious public health threat, injuring more than 20 million adults and children each year with their stings.

Fire ants are industrious architects. They build nests outdoors in mounds of soil that are about the size of dinner plates and live several feet beneath them in an elaborate network of subterranean tunnels. They also nest in rotting logs, around trees, under pavement and buildings, and inside electrical equipment and utilities, sometimes causing short circuits.

Properties with single queen colonies may have 40 to 150 mounds and about 7 million red fire ants per acre. If your property is infested with multiple-queen colonies, there may be 200 or more mounds and up to 40 million ants per acre.

How have fire ants spread so rapidly across the U.S.? First, there are winged “reproductives” in each colony that fly to mate. Studies have also shown that queens from multi-queen colonies can fly for miles (aided by the wind) to start new colonies.

Humans, however, are the main culprits. Transporting soil, grass sod, nursery plants, building materials, roof tiles, paint and beehives, have all been known to carry fire ants to new locations. Even cars and recreational vehicles have carried fire ants into new areas.

The Fire Ant Control Solution

It is possible to treat fire ant mounds with liquid insecticide products as well as chemical dusts and granules. These synthetic chemicals can be poured into or spread around the mounds and may be successful at killing some of the ants. However, this temporary method will not eradicate the colony, and the chemicals can be toxic to people, pets and livestock.

Fortunately, Fire Ant Control, LLC is a recognized specialist in controlling red fire ants on any size or type of land, public or private. We are capable of treating up to 1,000 acres per day.

Our potent, food-like granular bait contains an insect growth regulator which sterilizes the queen and is approved for use around people, pets, livestock, and on pastures, hay fields and farmland.

Worker ants eat the bait and carry it down into the colony, causing the fire ants to die naturally.  Once the queen is sterilized, the entire colony will disappear, and no new ants will be born.

Because fire ants fly, they will eventually come back. Therefore, we recommend treating your property three times a year to prevent further fire ant re-colonization.
