Aside from boiling water, which can be somewhat effective (but harmful), these other methods will merely cause the colony to flee elsewhere, often to another place on your property or into your house.
According to the National Park Service, boiling water may temporarily kill as many as 60% of the ants, but is harmful for people and the environment. Hot water can burn the plants around the mounds, and the ants that manage to crawl out will sting anything in sight. Boiling water will not kill the queen.
