Kill Fire Ants from the Inside Out
Fire Ant Control, LLC is headquartered in Bokeelia, Florida, and serves the entire imported fire ant quarantine area of the southeastern U.S.
Our proven fire ant treatment focuses on sterilizing the queen. We use only the best food-like, potent, granular bait that contains an insect growth regulator. It sterilizes the queen and is approved for use around people, pets, livestock, and on pastures, hayfields, and farmland.
Extermination is not instantaneous but, once the worker ants have eaten the bait and taken it down into the colony, sterilizing the queen, no new ants will be born, and the colony will disappear.
Experts agree that the lifecycle of a fire ant from egg to adult takes between 22 and 38 days. This means that, within about one month, you will be 85-95% fire ant free.
Because winged adult ants will fly off to mate and start new colonies, and existing colonies can expand into new territory, we highly recommend treatments every four months to keep fire ants under control.
Do Home Remedies Work?
Surfing the Web will turn up a wide range of popular home remedies for killing fire ants. In most cases, these remedies are ineffective, although you may cause the ants to move to a different area. Here are several examples:
Boiling or soapy water: Pouring boiling or soapy water on the mound may temporarily kill the ants it comes in contact with, but will rarely reach the mound’s reproductive areas to kill the queen. To succeed, you would need to treat each mound individually, and your neighbors’ mounds – and most of the fire ants would still survive below the surface.
Diesel fuel or gasoline: It is not uncommon for people to claim that pouring gas or diesel over and in fire ant mounds can rid your lawn of them. Some people even call for lightning them on fire. Alas, none of this is helpful, and all of it is damaging and dangerous.
Instant grits: The idea behind spreading grits on a fire ant mound is that the ants will eat the grits, which will swell in their stomachs and make them explode. This remedy has been scientifically proven to have no effect whatsoever on fire ants.
Orange or grapefruit peel: Citrus oil repels ants and other insects, and they avoid it. If you dump citrus peels on the mound, the fire ants won’t die but will relocate their mound to another spot.
