Fire Ant Colonies
A fire ant colony contains interconnected tunnels dug diligently and consistently by worker ants. The mission of fire ants is to expand the size of the physical colony and its population numbers. One year following its establishment, a colony’s population can be greater than 10k; by three years, the population can be as great as 100k individuals. This explosive population growth comes from a single source—the queen. Her one and only job is to reproduce.
The fire ant cycle is about one month long and consists of four phases:
- Eggs – a fully grown queen lays up to 5,000 eggs daily; they hatch after 6-10 days
- Larvae – 12-14 days; sex differentiation occurs at this point, with most being female and some winged male and winged female for future reproduction
- Pupae – transformational stage between larvae and adult
- Adult fire ant
Controlling fire ant populations is challenging because they have a leg up on the competition in the ecosystem since they’re an invasive species. Rather than targeting individual ants, our methods stop reproduction. Any technique that fails to stop the queen from laying eggs will be a short-term fix at best.
Fire Ant Control, LLC, provides professional intervention with a granular bait that the fire ants carry down to the queen, who becomes sterile when she ingests her share. Our headquarters is in Bokeelia, Florida, and in collaboration with our sister companies, we serve the entirety of the Southeast US—the fire ant quarantined area of the country.
Our bait is regulated and approved for use around people, pets, livestock, and vegetation, and we routinely treat properties of all sorts, including residential, commercial, public, educational, agricultural, and more.
The fire ant problem is very common in this area, but it isn’t uncontrollable. At the first sign of a problem, call our team for treatment. Fire ants damage property as they nest and injure victims when they attack. They will burrow beneath the home foundation, chew through wiring, and nest within the HVAC system—damaging them all. Protect the structural integrity of your home by handling fire ants.
Fire ant attacks are painful and cause a unique blister that lasts about a week. The reaction worsens with the number of stings, and fire ants typically attack in groups. Furthermore, for a small portion of the population, an anaphylactic response can occur that can end in death without prompt medical intervention.
