Identifying fire ant mounds is the first step to resolving the problem. Originally introduced to the US through the Port of Mobile in the early 1930s, red imported fire ants are found ubiquitously throughout the southern part of the country. The South offers the climate and conditions they love – warmth, water, and welcoming vegetation and cover.
Avoid a Fire Ant Mound
Fire ants sting when threatened, but they don’t just sting. They first secure themselves to their prey with their jaws and inject their unique venom through a stinger. They move in a circle, with their head holding onto the skin as the center, stinging repeatedly. The ant will sting viciously until physically removed.
The venom from fire ants irritates the skin, causing a blister with white pus that lasts for about a week, burns, and itches, and that’s in minor cases. For a minute portion of the population, anaphylaxis occurs, causing death without medical treatment, and for a more significant portion of the population, localized allergic reactions occur.
Spotting a fire ant mound is usually easy, but they can be concealed underneath logs and inside HVAC systems. Fire ants dig sub-surface, creating networks of tunnels where the queen, her eggs, pupae, and larvae eat and grow. Most of the colony’s population will be found deep within it, so treatments that don’t reach its depths are largely ineffective.
Fire ant mounds are the above-ground indication of a fire ant presence. Unfortunately, fire ants don’t always build mounds or build them in an area where they won’t be noticed. If you see mounds with a flat top of loose soil with a diameter about the size of a plate, it’s probably the solar panel for a fire ant colony below.
Choose Fire Ant Control, LLC
The quarantined region of the US for fire ant spread includes all of the Southeast, and Fire Ant Control, LLC, in conjunction with our sister companies, offers service to the entire area. We have the capacity to treat up to 1,000 acres per day with methods that require no wait time for re-entry and are approved for use around people, animals, and vegetation.
Our methods work because we target reproduction – not surface ants. We strategically place a granular food-like bait that the worker ants carry to the queens deep within the colony. After she consumes the bait, she loses the ability to reproduce. No new eggs equal no new ants, so the colony dies out as the living ants reach the terminal point of their life cycles.
Within 22-38 days, your property can be up to 95% fire ants-free. Be sure to reschedule three times per year since the bait can be used up and fire ants are mobile.
