Why Fire Ants Are So Difficult to Kill?

Top Rated Fire Ant ControlFire ants owe a great deal of their success at invading our backyards, athletic fields, parks, golf courses and other property to their ability to protect themselves from predators and reproduce quickly.

To kill a colony, the queen(s) must be killed. Properties infested with single queen colonies may have 40 – 150 mounds and about 7 million red fire ants per acre. If infested with multiple queen colonies, there may be 200 or more mounds and up to 40 million red fire ants per acre.

If all of the queens are not killed, they will continue laying eggs at up to 800 eggs per day. Those eggs will mature in as few as nine days, and the colony will remain fully operational.

Fire Ant Control, LLC’s potent, food-like granular bait kills the ant colonies from the inside out. The bait is ingested by the worker ants and carried down into the colony, causing the fire ants to die naturally. Extermination is not immediate but, once the queen has been sterilized, the entire colony will disappear, and no new ants will be born.

Do Home Remedies Work?

Surfing the Web will turn up a variety of popular home remedies for killing fire ants. In most cases, these remedies are ineffective, although you may cause the ants to move to a different area. Here are several examples:

Boiling or soapy water: Pouring boiling or soapy water on the mound may temporarily kill the ants it comes in contact with, but will rarely reach the reproductive areas of the mound to kill the queen. To succeed, you would need to treat each mound individually – as well as your neighbors’ mounds – and most of the fire ants would still survive below the surface.

Diesel fuel or gasoline: Some fire ant home remedies involve pouring gasoline or diesel fuel over the fire ant mounds and, worse yet, setting the mound on fire. These methods don’t work, are extremely dangerous, and will kill your grass and surrounding vegetation.

Instant grits: The theory behind spreading grits on a fire ant mound is that the ants will eat the grits, which will swell in their stomachs and make them explode. This remedy has been scientifically proven to have no effect on fire ants whatsoever.

Orange or grapefruit peel: Citrus oil repels ants and other insects, so they avoid it. If you dump citrus peels on the mound, the fire ants won’t die but will simply relocate their mound to another spot.
