About Fire Ants & Golf Courses

Red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) infest more than 360 million acres across the southeastern U.S., California and New Mexico, and pose a serious public health threat, injuring over 20 million adults and children each year with their stings.

The telltale signs of fire ant colonies are round, flattened mounds of loose soil. The oval-shaped mounds are about as wide as a dinner plate, about 10 inches tall, and have no visible openings. The ant colony lives beneath these mounds in an elaborate network of interconnected underground tunnels that extend outward and downward.

Thousands of fire ants live in just one colony. A property with single queen colonies may have 40 to 150 mounds and about 7 million red fire ants per acre. If infested with multiple queen colonies, there may be 200 or more mounds and up to 40 million red fire ants per acre.

Golf courses, with their fertile soil, high moisture content, and open, sunny areas, are irresistible to fire ants. They build their mounds around greens, bunkers, in the rough, around the bases of trees, and even nestled against rocks and other landscaping.

Fire ants can cause a world of hurt to unsuspecting golfers and spectators. Whether standing for a shot or reaching for a ball, hundreds of them can swarm out of a disturbed mound and sting in seconds. About 1 to 2 percent of people have a severe reaction that leads to anaphylactic shock and even death.

Fire ants can also infiltrate and destroy electrical equipment on the golf course due to their fondness for lights, transformer boxes, and irrigation equipment.

Kill Fire Ants from the Inside Out

To eliminate a fire ant colony, the queen must be killed. In multi-queen colonies, all queens must be killed. If the queens are not killed, the colony will most likely establish itself in another nearby area.

Fire Ant Control, LLC’s proven fire ant treatment focuses on sterilizing the queen. Extermination is not instantaneous but, once the worker ants have eaten the potent granular bait and carried it down into the colony, sterilizing the queen, the entire colony will disappear, and no new ants will be born.

Your property will be nearly free of fire ants within weeks; however, because fire ants fly to mate, they may return. For this reason, we recommend having your property treated three times a year to prevent them from re-colonizing your property.

We’re so confident that our treatment works, we guarantee it will rid your residential, commercial or agricultural property of 85-95% of the fire ants for four months at a time, or your money back.
