About Fire Ant Mounds & Colonies

Fire Ant Killer for FarmsThe telltale signs of fire ant colonies are round, flattened mounds of loose soil. Fire ants are master architects; they build and live in a vast network of interconnected subterranean tunnels that extend outward and downward from these central mounds.

Within each colony are workers and queens. Workers build the nests (mounds), take care of the queen and her eggs, scavenge for food, and defend the colony. Queens can live for two to six years and lay from 1,500 to 5,000 eggs per day, which explains why fire ants multiply so quickly.

Mounds can be found around stumps and trees, in rotting logs and under sidewalks, but many fire ants prefer open areas, such as meadows, pastures, parks, playgrounds, lawns and golf courses, as well as wilderness areas, cultivated fields and agricultural land.

Single queen colonies may have 40 to 150 mounds and about 7 million red fire ants per acre. Multiple queen colonies may have 200 or more mounds and up to 40 million red fire ants per acre.

How Fire Ants Affect Animals and Plants

Animals in pens, cages, and kennels are particularly vulnerable to menacing red imported fire ants.  For example, ants routinely attack hatching eggs, baby chicks, and injured fowl, especially those in coops with no means of escape. They are also attracted to many types of animal feed, such as dry dog food and livestock feed.

Red imported fire ants are also harmful to plants in many ways. They can cause girdling and kill plants and trees. They tunnel into the base of young plant stalks and into potato tubers. They collect and scatter plant seeds, affecting plant distribution and abundance. They compete with and kill native beneficial organisms, such as bees and native ants.

Professional Fire Ant Control

Fire Ant Control, LLC provides a proven service that works for properties ranging from a single acre to thousands of acres. We provide exact application rates with a minimum of interference to your daily operation.

The food-like granular bait we use contains an insect growth regulator that sterilizes the queen and is approved for use around people, pets and livestock. With our precise application rates, the bait falls to the ground where few living things other than ants will encounter it.

Extermination is not instantaneous but, once the worker ants have eaten the bait, carried it down into the colony and sterilized the queen, the entire colony will disappear, and no new ants will be born.

We guarantee that our fully licensed and insured service will help rid 85-95% of the fire ants from your property for four months at a time, or your money back. With an application every four months, our treatment will help prevent further fire ant colonization.
