Why Red Fire Ants Love Estero

The Village of Estero is sandwiched along Florida’s Gulf Coast between Fort Myers to the north and Naples to the south. Estero is Spanish for “estuary” – where the river meets the sea – for its location on the spring-fed Estero River which flows to Estero Bay.

Red fire ants adore moist land. That’s the reason they prefer watered lawns, golf courses, highway shoulders, pond shores and river banks as nesting grounds. Consequently, the Estero area, and the majority of Florida, is a tropical paradise for fire ants!

Fire ants build nests outdoors in mounds of soil and live underneath them in elaborate networks of subterranean tunnels where they reproduce rapidly. Even when you don’t see them, they are expanding right under your feet, and thousands of them can live in a single fire ant colony.

Within each colony are workers and queens. Workers build the nests (mounds), take care of the queen and her eggs, scavenge for food, and defend the colony. Queens can live for two to six years and lay from 1,500 to 5,000 eggs per day, which explains why fire ants multiply so quickly.

If you’re thinking all the water in and around Estero will deter or drown them, think again! Even during floods, the colonies will actually emerge from their nests, form a huge ball or raft that can float on the water, and flow with the water until they come upon a dry area or object that can shelter them until they can re-establish a nest (mound) in the soil.

You May Have Fire Ants If…

  • You see round, flattened mounds of loose soil in lawns, around stumps and trees, or under cement slabs and sidewalks, particularly several days after a heavy rain.
  • You disturb the mound, even accidentally, and see red and black worker ants aggressively rising up from beneath the mound and attacking anything standing above or near it.
  • A sting or bite gives you an intense burning sensation and, within a day or so, forms a white fluid-filled pustule or blister at the sting site. Red fire ant venom is the only fire ant venom that causes this symptom.
